About Kiran
Fighting climate change by tackling digital carbon emissions.
The Hidden Problem: Digital Carbon Emissions
As we spend more time in the digital world, few realise that our online activities come with an environmental cost. The average person stores vast amounts of data for files they never use, such as old photos duplicated across devices, forgotten downloads, outdated backups or years of emails they will never read again.
The tech industry's environmental impact is growing rapidly. Data centres are at the heart of this challenge. The constant demand for data storage and processing requires massive amounts of energy for both running equipment and cooling systems. As our digital lives expand with AI, cloud storage and streaming services, this demand only increases.
The good news? Unlike many environmental problems, digital carbon emissions can be reduced immediately through simple actions. Every unnecessary file deleted, every unused app removed, every duplicate photo cleaned up contributes to lowering the energy demand on data centres worldwide.
By 2025, the tech industry is expected to consume 20% of all global energy, leading to 5.5% of all carbon emissions. With the current trajectory, the tech industry could account for up to 14% of global carbon emissions by 2040, making it one of the top 10 most polluting sectors. We cannot ignore this any longer.
Our Vision
Kiran exists to change this trajectory. Our mission is to tackle digital carbon emissions across all devices, from laptops to phones to cloud storage, giving everyone the tools to understand and reduce their digital footprint.
We believe that small actions, multiplied by many users, create meaningful impact. By making digital cleanup easy and showing the real environmental benefit, we empower individuals and organisations to be part of the solution.
Kiran originates from the Sanskrit word “kirana” meaning “ray of light”. We chose this name to represent lightness, both in making devices run lighter and in being a beam of light against digital pollution.
The Founder
Kiran was founded by Selim, a climate-driven professional with years of experience in the software industry. After extensive research into the rapidly growing world of digital carbon emissions, one thing became clear: we need to make a difference, but we need the right tools.
The idea for Kiran emerged from a simple realisation: our devices are filled with digital waste we completely forget about. Every file we store, whether it is an old download, a duplicate photo or an unused app, requires energy. Data centres around the world run continuously to keep this data accessible, consuming vast amounts of electricity and water for cooling.
We feel a strong urge to fight climate change in any way we can, and technology can be part of the solution. We must harness its power to live more in harmony with nature by reducing digital carbon emissions.
